Description

Stealing Peter Coulson’s jeans. And models are the ones who complain about photographers trying to get them naked? Pfffft.

This is a work of delicious contrasts. Using a simple concrete wall behind the model and the jeans works to showcase both with its shallow plane, which forces the viewer to contemplate the significance of the two subjects without wondering where they are or why. Shadows serve to provide the necessary depth without undue distraction that makes the scene believable, regardless of the fact that those jeans are empty and standing upright (in an impressively realistic stance). The model's nudity and in fact her actual figure add an element of surprising softness that is echoed in her hairstyle and the more-feminine pose of her lower body, offset by her glare, the sharp angle of her arms, and the presentation of her chest. Those angles of her elbows lead the eye right back to the jeans, and the jeans are positioned in such a fluid way that the eye keeps moving. I read the composition as a diamond, similar to a triangular composition but with points at the top and bottom, which keeps the eye circling throughout the composition without any desire to leave.

You achieved a gorgeous loop light on the short side of the model's face, and managed not to lose the right eye in shadow. The lighting is consistent and properly metered. The shadows that do appear on the figures are small and not distracting; for example, the spot beneath the model's chin, or even the strip under her left arm. A less-experienced photographer would have larger, darker spots in both places, and would have failed to separate with such grace the jeans from the shadowed wall.

I have seen pants without wearers before, but this particular presentation is quite unique. The contrast of the nude model and the empty jeans could have been done in many ways, but your way is both revealing and contemplative. The viewer not only wants to study the model, but the pants as well, and each crease on the pants, and the wall, because the composition, angles, and various intriguing contrasts within the piece do not allow the eye to settle on one element for very long.

You must have a very good camera. The way skin looks like living velvet, with shadows not so much resting upon but caressing the forms… I’ve come to understand this as an effect of high-end equipment. But no piece of bought plastic can simply create a beautiful photograph. This piece was well thought-out and executed with precision, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to critique it.
